FT-ICR Studies of Clusters

A Home-made FT-ICR (Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance) spectrometer with a direct injection laser-vaporization-supersonic-expansion cluster beam source is implemented. Carbon, carbon-metal, silicon clusters are currently studied.

What is fullerene?
Closed caged molecules of carbon such as C60 and C70.
It is considered to be the 3rd form of carbon in addition to diamond and graphite. The following figures shows examples of fullerene.

What is FT-ICR?

Heart of FT-ICR(Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance) mass spectrometer is the ICR cell installed in the strong magnetic field of 6 T. As shown in the figure our ICR cell consists of 4 sectors of electrodes. The inner diameter is 42 mm, and the length is 150 mm. Two opponent sectors are Excite and other two are Detect. An ion in the magnetic field makes a ion cyclotron motion with f = qB/2pm. Hence, the frequency is inversely proportional to the mass m.
